Now, here is where the name “Cowboy Up Classic” comes into play; The Top 6 Drivers that lock in will each take a ride on a mechanical bull in front of all the fans. The rules are simple. Whoever holds on the longest gets the pole. Starting spots 1 through 6 will be based off the amount of time the driver can stay on the mechanical bull before being thrown off. The Inaugural Event took place at RPM Speedway in Crandall, Texas and was won by the 25C of Cody Smith from Kaufman, Texas.

The 2nd Annual Event was moved to Rocket Raceway Park with the 69X of Kaden Honeycutt the victor in 2022 driving for Kaine Buckmeyer Motorsports. In 2023, the 25C of Cody Smith regained his crown and title as the baddest Cowboy in Texas by driving from a 14th place starting spot, and cashing the big check for the 3rd Annual Cowboy Up Classic.

Who will top the mountain in 2024? Matthew Riskey #29 Commerce, Texas is the current Coston and Son Ready Mix USRA Limited Modified Points Leader at Rocket at this point in the season, and also picked up the Limited Modified win on July 13th, the final race leading up to the 4th Annual Cowboy Up Classic. Riskey was asked, “As the Points leader and most recent winner do you feel like it’s up to you to defend Rocket Raceway Park from the invaders this weekend?” The Pilot of the #29 Wicked Chassis Limited Modified answered, “Absolutely, but I’m hoping we get some help from our local big brothers (The B-mods) to stand up against these Missouri guys that are heading this way slab hunting.”One of those “Big Brothers” Riskey referred to is the 2024 Wes Grigsby Memorial Winner at Boothill Speedway, Dean Abbey (Boyd, Texas).

Abbey is now piloting a #26 GRT Racing B-Mod with the Muirhead Motorsports Team. When asked for his thoughts on the redraw process Dean replied, “It’s definitely the most interesting way to do a redraw.” The well accomplished driver added, “I feel like it’s a way to get the crowd into the redraw. Now my ability to do good in that redraw is don’t know, if I’m lucky enough to be in the top 6.”With the race moving from $2,500 to $5,000 to win, you can expect a massive turnout with both quantity and quality to chase after the Cowboy Hat in Petty for the 2024 title.
